Big Business Thinking for Small Business

When I had my home built I had different contractors for different jobs. A builder constructed the residence, I had a landscape gardener come in and design and help with the layout of the land and I got a concreter to build driveways. Each person had a specific skill set and by letting them specialise each job was done to a higher standard.
So what does this have to do with big business thinking?
You may have been the right person to start your business, but that does not mean you are the right person to run it. You don’t need to be in your business; in fact you are better off being outside your business. There is a saying that goes “You should work on your business not in your business”.
In this podcast we tell stories, one of Steve Jobs and his relationship with John Scully and the other of a mythical carpet shop. The carpet shop owner has a problem. He is instrumental in generating sales and feels he can’t step away. When he hires sales people they don’t close as many sales as he does, so he feels he can’t stop selling. We put forward the idea that if he focuses on growing the business then more leads will come and the lower conversion rate doesn’t have such an impact. Then he can focus on improving the conversions.
In the businesses current form it is limited by his ability to service leads that are coming to the business. The business is actually limited by the number of hours he can work.
Have a listen and tell us what you think.
