So How Do I Find Keywords?
This is one of the most common phrases used in the DIY SEO world. It isn’t that difficult and one of the best tools is free. Read on and answer the question – “How do I find Keywords”.
Keywords are not created equal
To answer the question How Do I Find Keywords? You must first think of the keywords that describe your business or topic. Make a list of these keywords and then write down every alternative you can think of for each of the words.
Why you did this will become obvious later. Then go to Google and set up an Google Adwords account. You should also have a Google Plus account as this is another great help in SEO.
Once you are in Google Adwords to go the “Tools and Analysis” menu and then down to the Keyword Tool option. This will open Google’s keyword tool. In the top box start typing in phrases. Longer phrases are easier to be more competitive in. Two phrases that are nearly identical can have vastly different traffic, so test them all and see which turns out better.
Here is a keyword example for this article.
I tested two phrases, “Using Adwords for SEO” and “How do I find keywords”. As you can see from the images below “How do I find Keywords” was vastly different. “Using Adwords for SEO” gets used about 54 times a month, where “How do I find keywords” gets used 1,800,000 times a month. Not only that “How do I find keywords” has low competition.
The level of competition is the most important factor in this process. Only go for phrases with low competition. You are better off targeting a phrase with 300,000 searches and low competition, than a phrase with 30,000,000 with high competition. You will never rank in highly competitive phrases.
So you can see by thinking about how people use language and what words your customers may use, you can get much better results.
In the podcast I give an example of how Airlines got this wrong in the early days of the internet.
I hope this puts you on the road to converting your content into traffic.
